Haemolytic anaemia
A reticulocyte count (erythrocytes/blood) is a first-line investigation in anaemia; it differentiates anaemia caused by excessive consumption (= haemolysis) from deficiency anaemias. The aetiology of haemolysis must be investigated whenever possible.
